Safety Recall: Walmart and Wayfair Pull Over Half a Million Beds Following Numerous Injuries.
A widely sold bed frame, available at major retailers like Walmart and Wayfair, is undergoing a massive recall after nearly 40 individuals suffered injuries due to its structural issues.
The problematic bed frames, totaling almost half a million units, were distributed between July 2018 and November 2023.
The recall, initiated on January 18, follows 128 claims of bed collapses and 36 reported injuries associated with the Tufted Upholstered Low Profile Standard Bed, manufactured in Malaysia and priced between $100 and $300.
Recall Details and Hazards: Bed Frames Can Break, Sag, or Collapse.
The recall notice highlights that the recalled beds pose serious hazards, including the potential for breaking, sagging, or collapsing during use, leading to fall-related injuries.
The announcement urges consumers who purchased these beds to immediately cease using them and contact Home Design, the manufacturer, for free replacement slats and side rails.
Claiming Free Repairs: Customers Required to Prove Ownership.
To claim a free repair, customers must provide evidence of ownership by submitting an image of the bed along with the law label or proof of purchase to Home Design.
The manufacturer emphasizes the importance of verifying ownership to facilitate the process of receiving replacement components.
Past Controversies: Wayfair Faces Previous Quality Concerns.
This isn’t the first time Wayfair has encountered controversy regarding the quality of its products. In 2019, a class action lawsuit accused Wayfair of selling mattresses infested with bedbugs for at least two years.
The lawsuit alleged that, despite being aware of the bedbug-infestation issues, the furniture retailer took no action to address the problem.
Previous Incidents: Wayfair and Bestar Linked to Safety Issues.
In 2022, an incident involving a Bestar wall bed resulted in the tragic death of a 79-year-old woman after the bed detached from the wall and fell on her, causing spinal injuries.
Bestar received 60 additional reports of incidents where wall beds detached and caused bruising and other injuries. These incidents further highlight the ongoing challenges faced by consumers in relation to the safety of certain furniture products.
