Candidate’s Appeal for Judicial Review
In a legal maneuver of significant proportions, the Supreme Court has opted to withhold judgment in an appeal that seeks to unseat Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State.
The five-member panel, led by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, decided to reserve judgment after concluding the final submissions from all involved parties on Tuesday.
Major General Aminu Bande, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in Kebbi State’s last governorship election, has fervently appealed to the court to nullify the Court of Appeal’s judgment, which upheld Idris’ election as previously determined by the election tribunal.
Supreme Court’s Decision to Reserve Judgment
Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, presiding over the panel, announced the court’s decision to reserve judgment after the adoption of briefs by all concerned parties.
The reserved judgment will be communicated to the involved parties upon its readiness for delivery.
Parallel Appeal: Rivers State Edition
In a parallel development, the Supreme Court has similarly decided to reserve judgment in an appeal challenging the electoral victory of Governor Siminalyi Fubara of Rivers State.
The appeal was lodged by Patrick Tonye-Cole, the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in the March 18, 2023 elections.
Grounds for Tonye-Cole’s Appeal
Tonye-Cole’s appeal contends that Governor Fubara failed to resign as the Accountant General of the state within the constitutional and Electoral Act stipulated deadline before participating in the 2023 elections.
Awaiting a Pivotal Verdict
With both appeals now under the scrutiny of the Supreme Court, the nation awaits pivotal verdicts that could reshape the political landscape in Kebbi and Rivers States.
