Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour Decries Supreme Court’s Ruling, Expresses Concerns Over Allegiance and Governance

Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour’s Reaction to Supreme Court Ruling

In response to the recent Supreme Court judgment affirming Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s victory, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, expressed his dismay through a post on his official social media handle.

Supreme Court’s Decision Deemed Sad and Shocking

Rhodes-Vivour described the ruling as both sad and shocking, emphasizing that the apex court had set a precedent that allows a governor or president to hold multiple allegiances to countries other than Nigeria and still serve as the commander-in-chief of Lagos State.

Concerns for Future Generations

Expressing his worry about the implications of this precedent, Rhodes-Vivour voiced concerns about future generations being led by leaders with conflicting interests and loyalties.

He questioned the suitability of individuals with dual allegiances holding crucial positions of authority.

A Governor’s Allegiance and the Call for Clarity

Rhodes-Vivour emphasized that liberal democracies would not accept being led by an individual who has sworn allegiance to another country.

He asserted that citizens should not be put in a position where they need to question the loyalty of their commander-in-chief or the chief security officer of their state.

Submission to the Supreme Court Decision

While expressing his submission to the Supreme Court’s decision, Rhodes-Vivour concluded with a statement urging for careful consideration of the implications of the established precedent.
