Lockerbie Locals Express Outrage Over Offensive Christmas Jumper Sold by Next

Fashion retailer Next has discontinued the sale of a Pan Am-themed Christmas jumper following public outrage, particularly from Lockerbie locals who deemed it offensive.

The item was taken down from Next’s website after a petition, initiated by resident Phil Geddes, garnered over 1,500 signatures.

Geddes urged Next to uphold their commitment to respect and empathy by immediately ceasing the sale of the jumper, emphasizing its potential to offend those affected by the 1988 Pan Am Flight 103 bombing over Lockerbie.

Public Outcry and Petition:

The controversy arose a week before the 35th anniversary of the Lockerbie bombing, which claimed 270 lives on December 21, 1988.

The Pan Am-themed Christmas jumper, priced at £36, faced criticism from residents, including Geddes, who argued that its design or message was disrespectful to the victims of the tragic event. The petition called on Next to acknowledge the sensitivity of the issue and remove the offensive product from its offerings.

Lockerbie Resident’s Personal Connection:

Phil Geddes, a resident who experienced the Lockerbie bombing at the age of five, expressed personal dismay at the sale of the jumper.

Recalling the impact of the disaster on his town, Geddes emphasized the real victims of the tragedy and the lasting trauma experienced by many in the community. His objection to the product was rooted in a desire to protect the memory of the victims and uphold respect for the historical event.

Concerns from Lockerbie Survivor and Families:

Dr. Jim Swire, who lost his daughter in the Lockerbie bombing, expressed concerns about the potential impact of the Christmas jumper on the memory of the local women who assisted in caring for the victims’ clothing.

While the jumper did not personally offend him, Dr. Swire highlighted the importance of preserving the memory of the local ladies who played a crucial role in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Next’s Response:

Responding to customer feedback, Next swiftly removed the Pan Am-themed Christmas jumper, branded as “All + Every,” from its marketplace. The decision was made over the weekend in recognition of the concerns raised by the public and the potential insensitivity surrounding the item.
