ECWA’s Plea Amid Economic Challenges
The Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) has made a formal request to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to eliminate tuition fees in all Federal Government tertiary institutions.
This appeal comes as a response to the challenges posed by the recent removal of the fuel subsidy in Nigeria.
Expression of Gratitude and Concern: ECWA President’s Statement
During a news conference in Lagos on Thursday, ECWA President Stephen Panya expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the ongoing efforts to restore the value of the naira.
However, he highlighted the pressing need for additional measures to alleviate the current hardships faced by Nigerians, particularly in the wake of the fuel subsidy removal.
Immediate Intervention Measures: Addressing Economic Hardships
Panya emphasized the commendable efforts to revamp the economy, acknowledging the restoration of the naira’s value.
However, he underscored the necessity for immediate and comprehensive intervention measures to mitigate the hardships resulting from the removal of the fuel subsidy and the floating of the naira. The adverse effects, he noted, include heightened rates of inflation, unemployment, and multi-dimensional poverty.
Key Proposal: Tuition-Free Federal Government Tertiary Institutions
The central proposal in ECWA’s plea is the call for all Federal Government tertiary institutions to become tuition-free.
Panya stressed the urgency of this measure while acknowledging the importance of formulating medium and long-term plans. The aim is to provide immediate relief to the populace grappling with economic challenges.
Fiscal Management Prioritization: ECWA’s Perspective
ECWA suggested that responsible fiscal management should be prioritized.
This involves cutting unnecessary expenses, enhancing revenue collection, and implementing targeted subsidies and social safety nets for vulnerable groups through a revitalized national social investment program.
National Unity and Healing: ECWA’s Call to President Tinubu
Beyond economic concerns, ECWA emphasized the need for President Tinubu’s administration to work towards national unity and healing.
Panya stressed the importance of building bridges across ethnic, regional, and religious divides. The administration is urged to promote inclusiveness, ensure equitable distribution of democracy dividends, abolish discriminatory policies, and foster a sense of belonging for every segment of Nigerian society.
Appeal for Love and Harmony: Embracing Nigeria’s Diversity
Panya concluded the statement with an admonition for all Nigerians to embrace the love of God towards one another.
He highlighted Nigeria’s unique composition, urging citizens to work together to transform diversities into strength, progress, and development. As a parting message, he emphasized the commitment of Christians to obey the command of Jesus Christ to live in peace with everyone.
