Obasanjo Encourages Nigerian Youths: “You Are the Leaders of Today”

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has delivered a message of empowerment to the youth of Nigeria, urging them to reject the notion of being the “leaders of tomorrow” and instead embrace their role as leaders of today.

Youths Urged to Break Barriers to Leadership

At a presidential Youth Retreat with the theme “Contributing to the Green Economy,” held at the Youth Development Centre in Abeokuta, Obasanjo emphasized the importance of young people in shaping the nation’s future.

He encouraged Nigerian youths to actively work towards removing any barriers that might hinder them from demonstrating their leadership skills.

Championing the Fight Against Climate Change

Obasanjo used the platform to highlight the urgent need for Nigerian youths to take up the mantle in the campaign against climate change and to advocate for a green economy. He stressed that the adverse effects of climate change, including abnormal weather conditions, extreme temperatures, flooding, and drought, require the collective efforts of all Nigerians to address.

Climate Change: A Reality We Must Confront

In his address, Obasanjo emphasized the undeniable reality of climate change. He noted that while some still consider it a myth or not real, the evidence is visible in phenomena such as floods, droughts, and extreme weather conditions.

The former president explained that scientists have provided a clear understanding of how human activities, particularly the emission of carbon dioxide, have disrupted the balance of the natural world, impacting forests, hills, valleys, and wildlife.

Consequences and Responsibility

Obasanjo underlined that the imbalance created by human actions will also affect humanity. Rising sea levels, increased instances of floods, droughts, extreme weather conditions, shifts in climate, and food insecurity are some of the consequences of climate change.

He emphasized the collective responsibility to address these challenges and safeguard the environment.

Empowering Nigerian Youths for a Sustainable Future

The message from Former President Obasanjo carries a call to action for Nigerian youths to take on leadership roles today and actively engage in the fight against climate change, as they are the leaders of today, not just tomorrow.
