Commending the Appointment
Osita Okechukwu, the Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), has expressed his admiration for the selection of Olanipekun Olukoyede as the new chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Okechukwu, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), described Olukoyede’s appointment as a pivotal moment in the ongoing fight against corruption.
A Plea for Support
The VON chief called upon those who may have reservations about Olukoyede’s appointment to set aside their differences and allow the new head of the anti-graft agency to settle into his role and contribute to the nation’s betterment.
Okechukwu acknowledged that controversy often surrounds appointments to vital positions like the EFCC chairman, irrespective of whether the appointment aligns with existing laws.
Breaking the Cycle of Insanity
In an effort to dispel doubts and concerns, Okechukwu drew inspiration from the wisdom of Albert Einstein, emphasizing that repeating the same actions and expecting different outcomes is a form of insanity.
He viewed Olukoyede’s appointment as a remedy, a fresh approach to enhance the effectiveness of the ongoing anti-corruption campaign.
Okechukwu asserted that appointing Olukoyede, with his legal background, was a step in the right direction.
Emphasizing Qualifications
Addressing questions about Olukoyede’s qualifications, Okechukwu highlighted the unassailable nature of Olukoyede’s relevant experience.
He pointed out that Olukoyede had previously overseen EFCC’s administration and dedicated two decades to combatting corruption.
Okechukwu had high expectations for Olukoyede’s tenure, urging him to complete investigations thoroughly to prevent media trials and encouraging him to intensify efforts to recover billions of dollars stashed abroad, part of Nigeria’s looted wealth.
The Need for an Informed Insider
Okechukwu stressed the importance of cognate experience in the fight against corruption and believed that the reforms envisaged under President Tinubu’s Renewed Agenda could best be achieved with an informed insider possessing the necessary legal tools.
He saw Olukoyede’s appointment as a pivotal step toward these reforms.
Recovering Stolen Wealth
Additionally, Okechukwu emphasized the urgency of recovering looted funds stashed abroad, not limiting the effort solely to the assets of General Abacha.
He argued that an informed insider like Olukoyede, who had served on relevant committees, was well-suited to uncover and repatriate these ill-gotten assets, thereby relieving Nigeria of economic challenges and debt burdens.
A Call for Support
In conclusion, Okechukwu called for support and unity behind Olanipekun Olukoyede, as he believed that the success of the new EFCC Chairman was synonymous with the success of Nigeria’s fight against corruption and economic recovery.
