Arewa Consultative Forum Criticizes Federal Government’s Alleged Bandit Negotiations

ACF’s Critique of Federal Government

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has strongly criticized the Federal Government for what it alleges to be secret negotiations with bandits in Zamfara State.

This condemnation comes in response to Governor Dauda Lawal’s accusation that the Federal Government was engaged in discussions with bandit groups in Zamfara without the state government’s knowledge.

Governor’s Accusation

Governor Dauda Lawal had earlier claimed that a delegation sent by federal government agencies had been conducting talks with bandit groups in various locations across Zamfara.

These alleged negotiations were carried out without the awareness or consent of the state government.

Federal Government’s Response

The Minister of Information issued a statement rejecting Governor Lawal’s claims.

The minister denied any involvement of federal government agencies in negotiations with bandits and accused the governor of politicizing security matters.

Governor’s Persistence

Governor Dauda Lawal remained steadfast in his assertion that the Zamfara State government possessed concrete evidence of the Federal Government’s clandestine negotiations with bandits.

He identified specific locations where these talks allegedly took place within the state.

ACF’s Concerns

In an interview with Vanguard, Professor Tukur Muhammad-Baba, the spokesman of the Arewa Consultative Forum, expressed serious concerns about the implications of such secret negotiations.

He argued that these actions undermined the rule of law and set a dangerous precedent for other criminal elements in the country.

Potential Inspiring Effect

Muhammad-Baba voiced fear that the covert negotiations might inspire other groups to take up arms and engage in similar criminal activities.

He questioned the wisdom of the federal government’s approach and urged a reconsideration of its stance on negotiating with bandits.

The Importance of Involving State Government

The ACF spokesman emphasized the need for proper coordination and cooperation between the federal government and state governments affected by banditry.

He stressed that negotiations, if deemed necessary, should involve state governments to ensure a comprehensive and effective strategy.

Synergy Across Affected States

Muhammad-Baba highlighted the necessity of regional synergy in addressing banditry, spanning from Sokoto to Taraba, Kaduna to Kogi, Borno to Nasarawa, and beyond.

He underscored the importance of involving all state governments and affected communities in devising a coordinated strategy to combat the banditry crisis.

Condemnation of Sabotage

The ACF expressed its dissatisfaction with the alleged secret negotiations and called for an investigation into the matter.

Muhammad-Baba asserted that such actions not only undermine the state government but also disrupt federal government efforts.

He called for accountability and condemned the idea of negotiating with faceless groups that continue to pose a threat.
