U.S. Army Soldier Travis King Released from North Korean Detention

American Soldier Travis King Returns Home

American soldier Travis King has set foot on United States soil once again, marking his return on Thursday, September 28, after being detained by North Korean authorities since July.

Detained in North Korea

Travis King’s ordeal began on July 18 when he intentionally crossed into the Demilitarized Zone separating North and South Korea.

He spent a total of 71 days in North Korean custody.

North Korean Decision to Expel

In a recent development, the North Korean government announced its decision to expel U.S. Army Private Travis King, thereby returning him to U.S. custody.

Following this announcement, he was initially taken to China before being flown to the United States after undergoing an initial medical examination.

Arrival in the U.S.

On Thursday morning, a military flight carrying Travis King touched down at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston, marking his arrival back in the United States.

Medical Examination and Continuing Challenges

Travis King, aged 23, is expected to be transported to the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, for further mental and physical examinations.

Challenges Ahead

While his release by North Korea is a significant development, Travis King’s challenges are far from over. He has been declared AWOL (Absent Without Leave) from the Army, a situation that can lead to military detention, forfeiture of pay, or even a dishonorable discharge.

Confirmation by National Security Council

The National Security Council confirmed Travis King’s return to U.S. custody during a call on Wednesday.

Appreciation and Assistance

Pentagon Spokesperson Brigadier Gen Patrick Ryder expressed appreciation for the efforts that led to Private King’s return.

He thanked personnel in the Army, United States Forces Korea, and throughout the Department of Defense.

Ryder also acknowledged the assistance provided by the governments of Sweden and the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in this process.

Safe Return Acknowledged by Family

Travis King’s mother, Claudine Gates, expressed her gratitude for her son’s safe return.

She conveyed her deep appreciation to the United States Army and its interagency partners for their successful efforts.

Privacy Requested

For the immediate future, the family has requested privacy, and Ms. Gates does not intend to grant any interviews.

Unknown Motive for Crossing

Throughout Travis King’s detainment in North Korea, U.S. officials were unable to communicate with him or ascertain the reasons behind his crossing into North Korean territory.

Allegations of Inhuman Treatment

In North Korean state media reports last month, it was stated that Travis King chose to enter the totalitarian country due to allegations of “inhuman maltreatment and racial discrimination within the U.S. Army.”
