Marco Jansen Shines as South Africa Secures a Dominant ODI Victory Over Australia
In the final One Day International (ODI) of the series, Proteas all-rounder Marco Jansen delivered a remarkable performance with both bat and ball, propelling South Africa to a resounding 122-run triumph against Australia.
Series Redemption: South Africa Emerges Victorious 3-2
Despite facing a 2-0 deficit earlier in the series, the Proteas staged a remarkable comeback, winning the last three matches.
This victory served as a confidence boost ahead of their upcoming World Cup warm-up matches in India.
Toss and Unfortunate Run Out
Australia won the toss once again and opted to field, with the pitch seemingly favoring seam bowlers. Unfortunately for South African skipper Temba Bavuma, he was run out for a duck due to a direct hit by Marnus Labuschagne.
Bavuma’s hesitation in taking a single called by Quinton de Kock, after being struck by a short ball from Sean Abbott, led to his dismissal.
De Kock and Markram Departure
Quinton de Kock, playing his final ODI match at the Wanderers before retiring from the format after the upcoming World Cup, was the next to fall.
He contributed 27 runs off 39 balls before being caught by third slip Cameron Green off Nathan Ellis’ delivery.
Partnership and Wickets
Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen then joined forces to rebuild the innings.
However, Rassie’s departure for 30, driving a Sean Abbott half-volley into the hands of short extra cover Marnus Labuschagne, disrupted their progress. Heinrich Klaasen (6) also fell victim to Adam Zampa’s delivery.
Markram-Miller Partnership
A crucial 109-run partnership between Aiden Markram and David Miller steadied the Proteas’ innings. Markram, on the verge of a century, was dismissed for 93 by Tim David on his first delivery in ODI cricket.
Powerplay Finish
In the final powerplay, South Africa accelerated, thanks to David Miller (63), Marco Jansen (47 off 23 balls), and Andile Phehlukwayo (39 off 19). Phehlukwayo’s explosive finish, featuring three consecutive sixes and a boundary off the last ball, propelled the home side to a competitive total of 315/9.
Australian Start and Jansen’s Impact
Australia commenced their innings aggressively but suffered early setbacks with David Warner (10) and Josh Inglis falling quickly, courtesy of Marco Jansen’s inspired bowling.
Mitchell Marsh Steadies the Ship
Aussie captain Mitchell Marsh partnered with Marnus Labuschagne before falling victim to Marco Jansen for 71 off 56 balls.
Marco Jansen’s Five-Wicket Haul
Man of the Match Marco Jansen continued to excel, claiming the wickets of Labuschagne (44) and Alex Carey (2) in the 21st over.
This marked his first five-wicket haul in limited overs cricket, finishing with figures of 5/39 in his eight overs.
Maharaj and Phehlukwayo Join the Wicket-Taking Spree
Keshav Maharaj took over from Jansen, securing the wickets of Tim David (1), Cameron Green (18), Sean Abbott (23), and Adam Zampa (5). Andile Phehlukwayo contributed to the wickets column with the LBW dismissal of Michael Neser (5).
Proteas’ Upcoming Challenges
With this victory, the Proteas prepare to travel to India for warm-up fixtures against Afghanistan and New Zealand, gearing up for their ICC World Cup opener against Sri Lanka on 7 October.
