“Snow, Rain, and Icy Cold Weather Forecasted for South Africa”

South Africa is set to experience a significant weather shift with the arrival of snow, rain, and icy cold conditions in various regions. Weather services have issued forecasts indicating the impending weather changes expected to impact parts of the country starting on Sunday.

The Upcoming Weather Fronts According to forecasts by VoxWeather’s Annette Botha, the weather transition will begin with the arrival of two cold fronts. The initial front will make its appearance on Sunday, followed by a more potent front that is poised to bring a combination of rain, showers, snowfall, and a substantial drop in temperatures to the Cape Provinces.

Snowfall Predictions Annette Botha highlighted the likelihood of snowfall in several areas. Snow is expected to start falling on Sunday, initially in regions like the Cederberg and Matroosberg mountains, and on high peaks in the Western Cape, including the Boland mountains near Franschhoek and Worcester. These wintry conditions will then extend to places like Sutherland.

Widespread Snowfall The forecast suggests widespread snowfall of up to 10cm in some areas. Additionally, the possibility of snowfall as far north as the Kamiesberg region south of Springbok in the Northern Cape has been noted.

Snow Continuation into Monday As the weather transition continues into Monday, snowfall is predicted to reach the Swarberg and Klein Karoo Mountains. Snow may even make its way to the foot of the Matroosberg Nature Reserve in the Western Cape. However, precise snowfall amounts may fluctuate as the event draws nearer.

Variability in Snowfall Predictions Forecasts vary regarding the amount of snowfall, with some models suggesting heavy snowfall early on Monday morning, while others indicate slightly less. The ECMWF (European weather model) and GFS (Global Forecast System) are both identifying substantial snowfall in Sutherland on Monday morning.

Snow Expansion On Monday, the wintry conditions are expected to expand further, encompassing areas such as the Great Karoo near Beaufort West and Nieu-Bethesda, the high-altitude regions of the Eastern Cape, the southern Drakensberg, and even extending into Lesotho.

Unusual Spring Snowfall Annette Botha explained that while snowfall during spring might seem unusual, it occurs every 2 to 4 years in South Africa. September signifies the transition from winter to spring in the Southern Hemisphere, and although temperatures are typically on the rise, certain regions, particularly higher-altitude areas like the Drakensberg and Western Cape mountains, may experience snowfall extending into spring.

Variability in Snowfall Amounts It’s important to note that the amount of snowfall can fluctuate from year to year, with September snowfall being less frequent and substantial compared to the winter months of June to August when temperatures are colder. Botha emphasized that this forecast spans four days and is subject to change as weather conditions evolve.
