Promoting Mixed-Use Buildings in Lagos Island Model City Plan
The General Manager of the Lagos State Urban Renewal Agency (LASURA), Tpl. Ajibike Shomade, has advocated the incorporation of mixed-use buildings in the Lagos Island Model City Plan. Shomade made this recommendation during a consultation meeting with the Dar-Al-Handasah Consulting Company, which has been tasked with developing the city plan. She emphasized the necessity of mixed-use buildings due to the predominant commercial nature of many parts of Lagos Island, which raises security concerns during the night when commercial activities cease.
Diversification of Building Usage
Shomade proposed that instead of exclusively commercial areas, buildings should be designed to accommodate multiple functions. This could involve allocating a few floors for residential purposes, a few floors for offices, and a few floors for shops. Such diversification would create a vibrant atmosphere and social activities for residents even after commercial activities have ended for the day.
Resettlement Plans for Adeniji-Adele Low-Cost Housing Estate
The General Manager also highlighted that the Lagos State Government has granted LASURA approval to establish resettlement buildings at the abandoned cable car site. These buildings will serve as temporary housing for residents of the Adeniji-Adele Low-Cost Housing Estate during the regeneration project for the estate. This initiative aims to prevent indigenous residents from being displaced from their original location and place of residence.
Consultation for a Holistic Master Plan
Dr. Adekunle Owolabi, the representative of Dar-Al-Handasah, emphasized the importance of the consultation meeting. He stated that the purpose was to incorporate LASURA’s projects and plans into the master plan for the Lagos Island Model City Plan. The goal is to create a comprehensive plan in which every Ministry, Department, and Agency (MDA) has a defined role to minimize disagreements among stakeholders during the project’s implementation.
Future Sustainability and Development
The Lagos Island Model City Plan, once completed, is expected to possess distinct features and prioritize environmental sustainability. It is envisioned to foster sustainable growth and socio-economic development for the State in the years to come.
