Court Remands 28-Year-Old Man in Correctional Centre
An Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Court, on Monday, January 8, 2024, took decisive action by remanding a 28-year-old man, Agboola Adebayo, in a correctional centre.
This stern measure follows the disturbing charge of defiling a 9-month-old baby brought against him.
Charges and Plea
The Lagos State government formally arraigned Adebayo, whose residential address remains undisclosed, on a two-count charge.
The charges include defilement and causing grievous harm to the innocent baby.
Shockingly, the defendant pleaded guilty to the grave accusations.
Judicial Action and Adjournment
In response to Adebayo’s guilty plea, Justice Rahman Oshodi promptly remanded him at the correctional facility.
The court also scheduled the case for a subsequent hearing, setting the date for March 25, 2024.
This underscores the urgency and severity with which the legal system aims to address such heinous crimes.
Details of the Offence
During the proceedings, the state counsel, Bukola Okeowo, provided details surrounding the appalling incident.
According to Okeowo, the crime occurred on March 23, 2023, in the White Sand Area of Ijora, Badiya, Lagos.
The prosecutor asserted that Adebayo’s actions constituted unlawful sexual intercourse, resulting in the defilement of the infant.
Additionally, the defendant was accused of causing grievous harm to the child, inflicting serious injuries on her vagina.
Legal Framework and Consequences
Okeowo highlighted that Adebayo’s actions contravene the Criminal Laws of Lagos State (2015), emphasizing that the offence is punishable by life imprisonment.
This underscores the gravity of the charges and the need for a thorough and just legal process to address such reprehensible acts against the most vulnerable members of society.
